To be fair, Theodore couldn’t remember the last time he had been on a picnic and quite frankly the sixteen year old was rather nervous about the whole ordeal. In reality it hadn’t been all that hard to ask Haru along, the promise of free food and a bit of exploring was enough to perk the other’s interest and yet the small raven haired male still had a difficult time asking. The tell-tale blush and the slight stammer in the Umbreon Gijinka’s voice made it difficult to get his point across and by the time he managed to spit it out, the young man couldn’t take it back. Even in his head he realized how stupid he must have sounded to Haru, but before he could even begin to correct himself the red head had simply smiled and excitedly replied that he would love to go on a picnic.
As they drew closer to the lake the young man realized that it hadn’t been such a bad idea after all. He would get to spend most of the day with his best friend and it would give the two a chance to catch up on everything that had been happening lately. Theodore would just have to focus on getting to the lake in one piece, his eyes glancing down at the vegetation taking care not to trip over any roots or rocks. His backpack had been filled to the brim with food, sandwiches and salad, drinks, and Pokémon food. He had put a lot of effort into making sure there was plenty of delicious things for Haru and himself to eat, after all they had the whole day to themselves and he’d be damned if he let the other starve. Speaking of Haru, the red head had disappeared from his sight again, no doubt the other had run off to explore the area. It was one of the most beautiful places around Aether, aside from the park, but it could be a bit tricky to navigate which was probably why Theodore rarely came around here.
For once it didn’t matter though because luck seemed to be in his favour. The weather was amazing, the sun was out and Teddy merely basked in its warmth, wearing a pair of shorts and a sleeveless red shirt to help keep the heat away. He stumbled along wearing an old pair of runners, glad that they were so comfortable or else the sixteen year old would find himself tripping over everything and quite possibly cracking the precious Dratini egg he carried protectively between his arms. Everything seemed perfect and the young raven haired boy didn’t have a care in the world, he had expectations for the day and so far everything was going just right.
“Haru, you didn’t get lost did you?” He asked, his soft voice carrying through the trees as he stepped into the clearing. His gaze fell on the lake, the shimmering, crystal blue water was one of the few pure things that remained in Aether. No one wanted to disturb the water, it was the lifeblood of the colony and the only thing that kept its citizens alive – no wonder they took such good care of it. “I’m gonna eat without you,” Theodore continued, a sly grin on his face as he sought out a nice place to set up the picnic. Now that he thought about it Haru had been given the blanket because Teddy hadn’t been able to fit it in his bag – damn, he really did have to wait for the trainer to show up.
Shaking his head Theodore smiled to himself as he walked to a nearby tree, the overbearing branches large enough to shade both boys comfortably and give them a little space to relax. The young man carefully placed his Pokémon egg in the grass before shrugging off his backpack and placed that against the tree. He kneeled down and unzipped the bag, quickly peering inside to make sure that none of the food had been spoiled. “Mm, Haru this food looks delicious.” Theodore sang softly, going specifically for a food dish and a container of some homemade Pokémon food and dumped it into the bowl. He placed it under the shade and reached into his pocket to release his Pokeball and the little Eevee inside it. “Go on sweetheart, have some lunch.” The young man encouraged, small fingers nudging his friend towards the food.

Haru never really meant to ignore Theodore; his longtime buddy meant a lot to him - perhaps as much as his own family and certainly more than he cared to admit to anyone else except, when feeling particularly bold, the raven-haired boy in question - but that did little to change the fact that whenever he found himself in a new, unknown venue the redhead’s first impulse was always to explore. So it was no surprise that as soon as the lake came into view that the energetic teenage had immediately sprinted ahead of his more focused friend, leaping over moss-laden fallen logs and ducking under low-hanging tree branches in an explosion of adventurous enthusiasm. Not that the area around Lake Antebellum was particularly alien to the trainer as he often ventured out here with his team either for battles or some bonding time, but it had been some months since the teen was last able to return to its shores and in a way his mad dash through the brush and greenery surrounding the city’s main water source was a homecoming for him in the way a traveler might scour the corners of their home after a long journey to make sure everything was still where it was when they left.
Grinning widely, the boy dodged around a root in his path and leaped over a cluster of small, thorny bushes, their tiny green leaves shivering from the rush of air he left in his wake. Their briars tugged at his khaki knee-length shorts - thankfully not enough to tear them, or else he’d have to sit through another of his mother’s scoldings that predictably ended in the middle-aged Mrs. Hamazaki tossing the offending garment at her son’s face and exasperatingly telling him to mend the damage himself because she was tired of always having to repair his frayed and worn clothing - and left small, superficial cuts on his legs where he didn’t quite get all the way over, but he just grinned at the sting they left behind. This, too, was both familiar and welcome, nothing that the small first aid kit nestled in his backpack couldn’t handle. His sister had insisted that he carry one with him for those times when she couldn’t Heal Pulse the scrapes and bruises away, but truth be told he kept it on his person more for Teddy’s sake than his own. Seriously, the shorter boy was so accident-prone that the sight of him without a bandaid sticking stubbornly to his skin was an oddity. A slight frown flickered across Haru’s face in a private moment of concern as he squelched through the muddy remains of a puddle, his well-worn hiking boots leaving deep imprints in the half-dried slime. He hoped that they would get through today without a serious injury, but there was always a chance he might still have to rely on the kit after all as apparently even Umbreon DNA was not enough to completely protect his friend from his natural clumsiness.
A playful tug at the drawstrings of his sleeveless blue shirt brought his mind back to the present, blue eyes blinking momentarily as he remembered where he was before crinkling with his smile as he reached out to pat the feathery head of the creature in front of him, its owner hovering in the air with a frantic flurry of shining brown wings. “Whoops, I guess I got a little distracted.” He chuckled as he moved his hand downward to scratch at the Rufflet’s chin, Haruto answering his trainer’s attentions with a pleased trill and an affectionate nibble to the teenage’s finger. Before he could take off again, her heard a distant, familiar voice calling him from beyond the trees, asking if he’d gotten himself lost. “Looks like it’s time to head back! I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to miss the food!” He added with a grin, withdrawing his hand from the shiny-feathered bird’s head and turning to follow the sound of his friend’s voice when a rustle in the nearby brush caught his attention. His eyes immediately locked on to the quivering leaves while jolt of anticipation ran through his body. It had to be a wild Pokémon! “You ready for this Haruto?” He asked the Rufflet, excitement tinging his voice, but before he could command the bird to attack whatever it was he heard his friend’s voice drifting through the trees again, taunting him with comments about the food. The Umbreon gijinka wouldn’t really eat without him, would he?
“...you know what, forget it. It’s not worth missing lunch.” The teen said with a sigh, though given the smile playing on his lips it was anything but genuine. He would just have to remember to come back for it another time.
After a minute or so of retracing his footsteps the redhead stepped out from behind the tree Theodore was sitting under, an apologetic grin spread across his face as he leaned down to get a look at the bag of food - and maybe, just perhaps, for the sake of being close. “Back.” He said simply as he plopped down on the ground beside the shorter boy, sliding his bag off his shoulder while Haruto hopped toward the Pokémon food, asking the Eevee’s trainer where his share of the food was with a curious chirp. “And no, I didn't get lost. See, there was this wild Pokémon and - hey, why haven’t you set up the blanket?” He asked, quirking an eyebrow at the bare ground before him for a moment before realization hit him like a charging Rhyhorn and his face met his palm. “Don’t tell me: I have it.” The boy mumbled before opening the top flap of his backpack and lo and behold! There it was, carefully folded above his first aid kit: the same silly star print quilt that he had been using for ages, veteran of late-night movie marathons curled up in front of the TV, enforced study sessions, and campouts alike. He pulled the blanket out and, after standing once more, unfurled the thing to its full size with a snap of star-spangled fabric so that it settled on the ground easily. Of course, he made sure that it didn’t catch Teddy’s egg or their Pokémon beneath it, so that it lay perfectly flat on the grass - well, maybe save for a tree root here and there.
With his part of the setup finally accomplished, Haru flopped back down on the soft, well-worn blanket across from Teddy and cast a hungry glance at the bag. “So, can we get started on the food yet? I’m staaarving.” He whined, pretending to collapse in intense hunger before rolling onto his stomach and reaching out for the backpack like a parched man to water. “Must. Have. Sandwiches!” [style= float: right; background-image: url(http://www.dinpattern.com/tiles/bit-tile-blue.gif); -webkit-border-radius: 35px 35px 0px 0px; -moz-border-radius: 35px 35px 0px 0px; border-radius: 35px 35px 0px 0px; height: 20px; margin-top: -381px; margin-right: -175px; width: 150px; padding: 5px; font-size: 25px; text-shadow: #10749A 1px 0px, #10749A 0px 1px, #10749A 0px -1px, #10749A -1px 0px; opacity: .9; font-family: georgia; line-height: 90%] -Notes- Words: Lolnope Tagging: Teddy. :3 Notes: Sorry it took so long, sorry it's not that great, and sorry for Haru being Haru in general. As he leaned back against the tree, Theodore realized he would have to be patient with the red head and that his friend would come back to join him when he was ready to eat. It wasn’t like the sixteen year old was about to complain, not when each trip seemed like a brand new adventure to his knight in shining armour who would duck and weave all over the place just because he could. When Theo took into account how long it had been since either boy had even bothered to come by the lake it was no wonder the other had taken off, with his luck he had probably run across some cool Pokémon. He almost felt a little guilty for calling out to the male, what if he had interrupted something important? Well... no matter, Theodore had no problems with waiting for the male after all, he had spent a lot of time making this meal and he’d be damned if the red head didn’t eat any of his cooking.
Slender fingers reached down to scratch the top of his Eevee’s head, the young Pokémon ignored his trainer as he was too busy stuffing his face. He certainly wouldn’t complain though, not when the raven-haired Gijinka gave him attention – it was as if the man knew all the right spots to scratch and had the Pokémon rolling around begging for more. Theo could only smile, and let his partner eat in blissful silence. It was so gorgeous outside, the sunlight was pouring down through the trees and made the crystal clear lake glisten and shine. After a minute or so of just watching the lake, he let his eyes slip shut and gently placed his hands in his lap. A nap certainly wasn’t out of the question, the sixteen year old was already comfortable enough for him to drift off and considering how long of a trek it had been to get to the lake Theodore seemed ready to catch a bit of shut eye.
It hadn’t been very long though, it felt as if mere seconds had passed before footsteps caught his attention and the teenager opened his eyes to find an apologetic looking red-head standing in front of him. No matter how much he teased his human counterpart, Theodore knew that deep down he just wanted to see the other boy smile. “Welcome back,” He greeted brightly, gesturing to the open grass as an invitation to sit down. As the birdlike Pokémon skittered forward, Teddy smiled and leaned forward to grab the bag again, peering inside as he looked for the other container of Pokémon food. “Hush little one, don’t worry.” Theodore replied calmly, opening the container and placed the food into a bowl. “I didn’t forget about you.”
He opened his mouth to answer Haru, but was cut short when his companion suddenly realized that there was no blanket on the ground and could only offer the other male a childish grin when he remembered that he was the one toting it around. Shaking his head, Theodore tried to move further away so that Haru had space to spread out the blanket and the moment that it hit the soft grass, the sixteen year old had shuffled all of his belongings onto the worn out fabric. His backpack sat neatly in the center of the blanket, the dark colored bag open all the way as he began to pull out sandwiches and whatever else he brought along to feed his best friend with. “Arceus, just hold on.” Theo replied after a minute, a soft hand running through the other’s hair, scratching the mess of red hair lightly. “I thought I packed some bottles of juice in here too,” His brows furrowed in thought, trying to recall where he stuffed them.
After a moment or two of search, the Umbreon Gijinka had finally produced the two bottles, setting the chilled plastic near Haru’s face. “Besides, it’s not like the food is going to run away on you. Take your time and eat all that you want.” A small smile crept onto his lips, finally satisfied when he had put the entire spread onto the blanket. Sandwiches and all sorts of other goodies decorated the overused blanket, almost everything that Theodore could have thought of had been stuffed into that backpack of his just so he could make sure Haru would have enough to eat. “Enough of that though, I wanna hear about this Pokémon you found!”
