Tobias' hand came down again to stroke Ariel's head, the Buizel obviously sulking even as he tilted his head into his Trainer's hand. The human knew that the Water-type was proud, almost as prideful as he could be himself, and no doubt being told in such a harsh manner to lay off had grated against him in a way that left him wanting to snap at whatever it was that irritated him next. Tobias couldn't have that, although he didn't really want to cater to Ariel's whims. Although not waking up in a bed soaked clean through with water would be a good thing. He nodded to himself quietly, his fingers twitching in that way that he knew the canine loved as it teased his sensitive fin, one of his favorite places to be scratched. His sky blue eyes flickered about the area, looking for Mulan as he realized he hadn't seen the little Snubbull in a while, but he settled again when he noticed her standing guard a little ways away, sniffing about some trees curiously. He then turned his attention back to the girl just in time for her to ask her question, looking up from her red-tinted Absol as she did. "Uh..." he stated, blinking at her request. She wanted him to teach her how to fence? He winced at the memories of how he had learned himself, all the welts that had been left on his arms and his legs and his sides from being smacked with the flat of the blade so that he'd learn how to block and not leave openings. It had taken him weeks just to be able to come home without a new collection of bruises and red spots littering his skin from each successive practice, and even then it had been a few months before he could start counter-attacking in-between guarding himself from the foils that always seemed to dart their way under his defenses. "I don't really know if that's the best idea... I'm not really a teacher... don't have the patience for it..." And he didn’t. It was always a pain for him to take his Pokemon out for training, and usually then he’d just go straight to battling the wild Pokemon in the area, using whatever attacks he could so that he would get an edge and then be able to level up quickly, forgoing practice against inanimate objects to practice aim or anything else to hone up agility or defense techniques and things of that type of nature.

In his mind, he didn’t care about the difference in level and skill. If the Buizel attacked he would defend Lina. If he doesn’t, Crimson could wait for a proper battle to happen when he was stronger and better able to help his trainer. Lina made to stand up; resting the hand she was using to pet Crimson on his head as a means to keep him there with its presence. Crimson rubbed his head against that hand, content to stay by her side. One way or another, she would learn how to use a sword. She didn’t like depending on others like she did with him, though now that she has Crimson she’ll have to get over that part of her to work as a team with him and she was more than willing to break that part of her for his sake, but she had just met Tobi and this could be their last encounter before fate separated them for maybe the rest of their lives. Though, Lina would love to have a friend who was of the human race, even if they didn’t meet often enough to cement anything lasting. A human friend would be nice and she would try to make any excuse to keep Tobi around, something she would later find odd since living in the slums makes a person who was trustworthy as hard to find as hatching a female Eevee. Tobias shrugged, his hand pausing on Ariel's head. He knew someone who might be able to teach her, but he wasn't sure if it was a good idea for him to bring her to his old mentor. The man was a hard teacher, not to mention that he was sometimes rather... strange. He meant well, of that the human was certain, but the man was rather... just odd, to put it simply. "Uh..." he stated again, looking away and biting his lip. What if this girl had a family? He wasn't going to be responsible for killing her for bringing her into the gang world. Because that was what would happen if he introduced her to his mentor. She'd be dragged into the gang world, and then she'd be killed, which was the very thing he wanted to try to avoid. His hands started moving again over Ariel's head, keeping the Buizel from snapping at the Absol while also managing to keep himself grounded until he tried to find a solution that satisfied him. He did want to give her a way to defend herself - and he would know firsthand that a sword was a good path to choose, at least for humans - but he didn't want to drag her into something that could get her killed. He hated the fact that death was there, he hated looking it in the face, and that sentiment was one of his strongest things that was engrained in his heart. Death was horrible, something he didn't want to ever have to see again, but he knew that he would have to deal with the scythe-wielding ghost for the rest of his life. It was a fact of life, no matter how much he wished otherwise. It would always be there. Always.

She resisted the urge to tap her foot impatiently, her attention focused mostly on Tobi while some of it also rested on Crimson. Crimson seemed calm enough, though his look clearly spoke of fight if anything made a wrong move near her. The question Lina asked was a simple one; a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ question which would most likely end in a ‘yes’ since he couldn’t have gotten so good on his own like that. From the doubt in his eyes, he must have been thinking of ways to tell her gently that his skills with the sword were tied to his days in the gang world. It was sweet that Tobi was so concerned about her safety, but she could handle herself! Scratching at a spot on her Absol’s head gently to keep from fidgeting where she stood, Lina waited. He must know someone outside the gang world who could teach her if he didn’t want to, there can’t be that few swordsmen in the city! Tobias sighed and looked away. "Look, that's not an option for me to answer that right now," he stated, his gaze focused on Mulan rather than the girl before him with her Absol or even the Buizel who was beneath his hand, nuzzling up against it in a plea for more attention. "I wish I could. But the thing is, it's not that simple. It never is. If I could choose, I would teach you. But the thing is, it's not my choice. Not anymore." He sighed heavily, yanking his hand through his hair, ignoring out it was messed up again. He had a baby Houndour to train, and he refused to put that Pokemon in jeopardy. He had to go back home and figure out what he was going to do to train the little pup up into a true fighter, and every minute he spent here was another minute wasted. "Look, I'll talk with you later, okay? I have to go now," he stated, turning on his heel and stalking away. If she tried to stop him, he knew Mulan and Ariel would get violent with her. Really, he just wanted to go home and figure out what he was doing before his brain exploded from all the stress, and that obviously wasn't going to happen if he didn't do anything about it first.

He sounded like something was holding him back. She bit her lip, her own hands stroking her Crimson’s head as a means to calm herself down, the Absol having quenched his flames in the wait. He must know someone if he’s not willing to teach her himself! She was about to speak when he said he needed to go. She watched him leave without asking when or where they should meet up, not sure if he would keep his word on seeing her again. They had just met, and from what his body language told he had more important things to do now, most likely tied to his new Houndour pup. Lina sighed, remembering that she too needed to train her own newborn up if they ever had any hope of making it to the Canopy. Patting the rust and crimson head of her new friend, she said “Time to head home, Crimson. We should have been back hours ago.” With that she began leading Crimson down the way she was heading before spotting Tobias, Crimson keeping up with her slow pace. She’d worry about training him when they got to their home. Let the game begin, need something to believe in [/div]
