A few stray shrubs clung to the dirt with roots half pulled from the ground. Koby allowed one of the small prickly leaves to dance over his fingers as he knelt down on the sand. "The Wastelands.." he murmured to himself, taking in the scene around him. "Kind of befitting." The smell of the shrub as it brushed against his skin began to lift into the air and was becoming noticeable by the boy. He released the shrub from his grip and pulled himself to his feet with a sigh.
Koby glanced skyward, a hand shielding his eyes against the direct light from the sun. It was a warm day, at least in the sun, but not quite enough for him to lose any layers of clothing. Water, however, could become a problem. Koby noted which direction the city was and made a mental note to always keep it in view. The last thing he wanted was to get lost out here, dehydrate, and die. His attention was drawn for a moment as he thought something passed overhead. Koby watched for a few minutes waiting for the object to pass through the other side of a wispy cloud but it didn't. "Must be seeing things..." he rubbed his eyes wondering if they were simply playing tricks on him. It was funny how you could stare at something for a long time and then look somewhere else and the object appeared to remain in front of you.
Koby kicked his boot into a clump of dirt and watched as it bounced and rolled across the ground before breaking into two and toppling over. This place certainly appeared to be a good place to find ground or rock type Pokémon, perhaps even a flying type might cross his path. In all honestly Koby wasn't sure what kind of Pokémon he was after, he wasn't looking forward to ever hurting a Pokémon, which was why he'd decided to try and find one that he could use in battles in his place. He was hoping that the Pokémon in the area weren't stupid as his grass attacks could do some serious damage to both ground and rock types. Koby was hoping he could persuade them to join him. Of course there were a few types he'd likely avoid for now, namely the ones that could do real damage to him. It wasn't that he didn't like those types, Koby loved quite a deal of fire types for example, but he didn't favour losing an arm or leg to get one.

WILD NUMEL APPEARED! [/style] Numel || Male || Oblivious || Fire/Ground || Level 9 Tackle || Growl || Ember || Magnitude For a slow-moving Pokémon, you would think that life out here in the Wasteland moved at a good pace, provided you managed to avoid any of the predators that occasionally roamed around the land. Even the typical life-or-death struggles of the wild tended to be short, violent affairs quickly swallowed up by dust and forgotten, allowing life as the denizens of this region to go on just as it always had: slow, but without the steady. Resources in this arid climate were scarce, which meant you either conserved your energy and used it only in emergencies - like, say, being run down by an angry Onix - or you became one more set of bones buried under the dust and dirt that covered everything as far as the eye could see. That didn't stop the Numel from wandering out from the safety of his rocky home and into the open in search of anything that could make his day a little less mind-numbingly boring, however. Which was saying something, considering that his species were almost as well-known as Slowpoke and Slakoth for their numb minds, but even he just couldn't take it any longer. Staring at a wall for hours on end in between naps, venturing out only to nibble at some of the small, scraggly plants that managed to grow out here, it was all so boring that even one of the most boring Pokémon in the world was bored! Sighing, the fire-type swung his head side-to-side, hoping to catch a glimpse of anything but the cracked land stretching out around him, but it was just the same as ever. He almost hoped that an angry Onix would pop out of the ground and start pitching boulders at him, if only because it meant something was happening! After what seemed like hours of searching - though in truth only a few minutes, as everything seems to stretch on longer when bored - a sudden clatter caught the Numel's attention...slowly, as his rounded ears twitched immediately at the sound, but it took a moment for his brain to catch up with him, and another for the dual-type to lift his head in slow curiosity, turning to stare at the source of the noise: a small clod of dirt, which fell apart as he looked. Not exactly the most fascinating thing in the world, but it was the first movement he'd seen yet, and the Numel broke into a slightly quicker plod than usual to approach it. Strange, it couldn't have moved there on its own...maybe the wind just blew it? But no, that was a boring idea...perhaps there was a Pokémon hiding under it! But the camel was disappointed when he nudged the pile with a stumpy leg and nothing hopped out at him, screeching in fury, and with a snort of frustration he opened his maw and shot an Ember at it. It was only when he glanced up and into the distance again that he caught sight of something odd, some kind of unfamiliar Pokémon(?) standing close by...how had he not noticed that before?
"Mel?" He drawled at the Thing, tilting his head in question, the quick twitch of his ears the only real indication of just how excited he was to finally see something different out here! But...what on earth was it, anyway?

The boy was just about to continue onward when he noticed the yellow Pokémon; In truth it had been the fireball shot at a clump of dirt that had suddenly gained his attention. Worry etched onto the boys features as he realized just how stupid it had been to venture out here. Koby had assumed to find only ground and rock types, or perhaps a bird flying past, he hadn't even thought of stumbling across a fire type - even if it was part ground.
Numel weren't exactly the smartest of Pokémon and were indeed quite simple minded. He hoped the Pokémon's plan for him didn't involve roasting. Fire types had always been one of Koby's favourite types of Pokémon, he'd chosen the DNA of a fire type... the boy swallowed a lump that had been caught in his throat. It was strange how things never really turned out as planned. Numel were strong Pokémon and as he stared at the sleepy-eyed camel Koby recalled something about a numbness to pain that the Numel had. Koby wasn't sure he wanted to test and see just how much pain the little guy could handle because even if his attacks barely fazed the Numel he knew for sure any retaliation with a fire attack would be about as consequential and hacking off his own hand. The boy took a slow step backward, his eyes never leaving the Numel that now seemed rather interested in him. The thought of outrunning the camel crossed his mind, and Koby made a mental note to turn tail the moment things started looking bad. For now, however, there was no harm in trying to be civil about things... right?
Koby slowly drew in a breath and against his better judgement squatted down to a more reasonable level for the Numel. It wasn't the most effective position if he had to flee but every good Pokémon relationship had to start somewhere. Then it hit him, food. A nice full stomach always made him sleepy, so perhaps it would have the same effect on a Pokémon that already appeared to have rather droopy eyes. Koby hadn't exactly been lucky in the food department, most of the time he had to take what he needed, but his body had grown used to the limited food supply it had been receiving. "I bet you're hungry, right?" It wasn't until after he asked that Koby realized that if he couldn't understand a Pokémon why did he expect them to understand him. Just because he had a bit of Pokémon DNA running through his veins didn't mean he knew their language. Language was something that was taught. If you hear a low growling voice, no matter what language, it can be assumed that you're doing something wrong. Koby made a point to keep his voice upbeat through the remainder of the conversation.
The boy pulled out a piece of cloth and gently unwrapped its contents. Koby frowned, only just then remembering how little was remaining of the tiny morsel of food. Taking a small crumb he popped it into his mouth just to show that it was indeed edible and placed the cloth on the ground. "It was once a bread roll." the boy shrugged. "I'm afraid it may have crumbled a little." Koby rested his arm on his knee to keep himself balanced and eagerly awaited the Pokémon's reaction.
