★ HABITS, QUIRKS:

• Cae is mute. To be exact, he can't speak. His mutism is caused by brain damage as opposed to usual throat problems, so he would actually be able to speak, but can't. He can form words if he forces himself, though, but he never does. He has no problem with other sounds whatsoever, so he can actually be heard to laugh, snicker, whistle or whine. (Lake, on the other hand, has no problem speaking.)
  
• He suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder (also called Multiple Personality Disorder). His other personality is calling himself "Lake", and had manifested himself during Cae's childhood. As opposed to the main personality, Lake is perfectly aware of the fact he is only an alter of Cae. He usually comes out when Cae is in danger to "protect themselves". Lake can speak without any problem, is right handed, and can use a katana better than the original persona.
  
• He can use sign language, of course, and is using it at home. For strangers, he carries with him a small PDA that helps him type up messages he wants to tell others. It is with him all the time.
  
• He commands his pokemon with whistles and other sounds instead of words, since he can't speak.
  
• Cae is left handed, while his alter ego, Lake, is right handed.
  
• He is a little bit wary of gijinka people... It's not that he is afraid, he just knows that they are strong enough to hurt him. Also, he was offered to have the gijinka transfusion at a certain point as an attempt to heal his mutism, but he fiercely refused. He prefers to stay human...
  
  

★ OVERALL PERSONALITY:

Many things about Cae’s personality can be linked to the fact he is unable to talk, and hence unable to express himself verbally as teenagers usually can. He is thoughtful of others and is always willing to listen to their problems if they decide to confide in him. As he isn’t able to comfort people by words – writing his sentences on a PDA screen can go so far – he is more of a person of actions. He pats people on the shoulder, pets their hands, and hugs them to show comfort. He also displays various nonverbal reactions to make up for the lack of words, so even though he can’t speak, he is a really responsive person. Anyone is able to read his emotions on his face or from his body language, even if they didn’t know him for long. People talking with him should prepare to see him blush, laugh, or even cry, when expected.

People observing him might think he is a bit of an artistic person. He is quite creative and can usually come up with various ideas for a problem to solve it, but on the other hand, he lacks the self confidence to execute any of those. Having no way to express himself easily, his self-esteem suffers quite a bit and hence makes him insecure about his own place in the presence of others. He usually has a set routine for his days and a certain comfort zone, which, when disturbed, makes him confused and indecisive. It’s quite hard for him to match his usual pattern to others, though it’s not impossible, but he prefers to do things how he usually do them.

Despite being insecure, people also describe him as rash. When there is no time to explain something, he has to resort to actions and do the explanation later. The barrier his muteness creates made him be an “act first talk later” kind of boy, with the exception that he won’t literally talk even later. He is a kind and sweet boy, usually keeping others’ problems in sight (unless his comfort zone is disturbed), and he easily sympathizes with people who have problems. Even though he doesn’t have many recollections of his past events (that Lake is deliberately hiding from him), he especially feels sympathy toward those who were abused and either physically or mentally hurt by strangers or friends.

Lake’s personality, on the other hand, lacks the necessary compassion and sensitivity to live in a social group. He only cares about the safety of Cae and himself, and usually surfaces in times of danger, or when Cae gets dangerously close to remember the details of past abuse.

Unlike Cae, he is able to talk, and tends to use it as an advantage, distracting or misleading others with his words. He is also in no way careful of what he says, he easily picks a sarcastic tone and bluntly states his discomfort or hate towards whatever it is that pisses him off. Unlike Cae, he is much more organized and can adapt to unpredicted situations much easily. His comfort zone is either non-existent, or so strict that it is always disturbed. So it is his witty and inventive nature that can solve complicated situations, just like how Cae has the crafty tweak in him.

Whenever Lake surfaces, it usually means bad. He has nearly no shackles holding his actions (and words) back as long as he can protect Cae and himself, and he will use whatever means necessary to keep them safe. He is incredibly protective, and if a psychiatrist were able to pinpoint Lake’s personality behind the aggressive and ruthless fighter, it would be obvious that he is a Protector – one of the many usual personality types described by the scientists researching MPD. While Cae is reckless, Lake can be more accurately described as fearless. There are thoughts behind his actions, or at least more so than Cae has, but he acts even when he is clearly aware of his chances to lose. As long as he can protect what he wants, any other loss is acceptable.

When someone knows that the situation can turn out all kinds of bad, they should fully expect Lake to betray them if that meant the safety of Cae and him, and if that rises their chances of winning. It’s not a surprising act from Lake, and promises made to him should never be expected to be kept. Being blunt is one thing, and lying through his teeth for his own sake is another.

Cae has no recollection of whatever Lake is doing when the secondary personality surfaces in their body, but he sometimes has vague dreams of those times. Lake, however, knows well what Cae is doing during his normal daily routine, and is ready to take over whenever he thinks it would be dangerous to let the primal personality in charge.
